On February 14, 2012 I was working at Painted Earth. It was in the late morning and I was wearing my black apron and putting away the ceramic pieces that people painted and were ready to be picked up. When I heard someone walk into the door I looked up and saw my handsome boyfriend walking up to me with chocolate, roses and strawberries in his hand. The smile on his face said it all. He was proud to call me his valentine and we knew that we would never spend valentines day with anyone else. Exactly one month before our first Valentines day, Patrick came into Painted Earth while I was working and painted a little heart box. When he was done painting, he came up to me and handed it to me. On top of the heart box, it said Kaylee. When I opened it, there was a promise ring in it and on the bottom inside of the box, it said promise. Talk about cheesy and romantic! As he was handing me the box he started to explain the feelings he had for me and about the moment he realized he loved me. As soon as I opened the box I saw the ring and he perfectly timed his words, "I promise that one day, I will marry you." With tears in my eyes I looked at him and as his eyes met mine he said, "I love you" and I said it back. That was the first time he had said those 3 words to me. Our first Valentines was definitely one for the books and I will never forget!
[side note: 1st picture was taken at the beach a week before our first valentines day. 2nd picture is from that same beach trip. 3rd picture was the exact picture I took and posted on Instagram on Valentines day 2012]
Patrick is a very hopeless romantic guy and likes to put effort and thought into his gifts's. He's not one to just buy a bunch of materialistic stuff, he likes to make everything and do everything from his heart. I love that so much about him! At the time, we were still getting to know each other and just our ways of things. I was very used to materialistic things given to me and the previous valentine I had, the guy gave me a $100 bouquet of roses! That was nice and all, but money can't buy love. I had no idea what to expect from Patrick. This was the first time that he was planning something like this for us. We had 2 completely different ideas of what a romantic date looked like. So, heres how it went....
To start, he told me to wear a dress and heals and get all fancy. So, that is exactly what I did. He didn't think about the weather or what we would be doing, he just wanted me to be all dolled up. He told me not to worry about eating because he had it all planned out. I don't think he realized at that time how much I could eat! As we were driving I was getting concerned because it looked a little chilly and cloudy. I hoped that we were going to dinner indoors because I was cold and hungry. But, that is not what he had in mind. He took me to a park by his house. He put down a blanket and put little tea light candles all around us with a little basket with picnic food. Sounds super romantic when you picture it. But, it wasn't like what you see in the movies when a guy does that. It was cold and windy so the wind kept blowing out the candles. Also, trying to sit on the floor in a dress was very uncomfortable and he only brought little snacks, so I was starving still! I tried to keep a positive mindset and hoped that the date would get better. I put a smile on and tried my best to enjoy our time. You could tell he felt bad that the candles kept blowing out and that I was still hungry and cold. The next thing he had planned was to take me to Old Town Temecula, walk around and go to a little dessert shop to get caramel covered apples . Well, by this time the sun was down so I was definitely freezing. Not to mention, half of old town has wooden boards for the sidewalk so my heels kept getting stuck. My feet were hurting because we were walking around Old Town for about 30 minutes. By this point, I had a hard time keeping a smile on my face because I was still hungry, cold, my feet hurt and the night was NOT going how I expected. We finally get to the dessert place and they didn't have any caramel covered apples so we got chocolate covered bananas instead. We are sitting outside the shop on a little bench and we were both frustrated. He could tell that I wasn't enjoying the night and I thought he was mad at me because I wasn't being all happy and excited. We had a long talk on that bench and talked about what we both expected and why it went the way it did. He learned that night what I like and don't like.
After that Valentines day, he was a lot better at planning date night and I did a lot better with appreciating his efforts and not expecting something unrealistic. We have learned A LOT about each others love languages. Today, Patrick has to work all day... literally. He won't be home until 11pm. So today, I will be spending Valentines Day with my 2 little loves!
Happy Valentines Day Everyone!
